From the Developer:
Thanks so much for checking out Sugar Ghouls! Making a 3D platformer has been something I've wanted to do for a very long time, and joining Scream Jam was a wonderful motivator for me to cobble together a small spooky prototype using everything I've learned in development so far. Although it's just a demo, I had a lot of fun trying to make something in such a short time, and I hope you enjoy it.

Awesome video, glad you enjoyed! Thanks for playing ✌️
Saw I had downloaded this and finally played it, and man am I glad I did. Scratched my itch for Banjo-Kazooie style 3D platform that no one has nailed for a long time.
custom cursors are the reason people should learn css
Made a video on Sugar Ghouls!
Love the Music and Game! Hope for a Full Version for Next year or another time for Spooky Mouth
The presentation, tunes, graphics, all fantastic (as I've come to expect from RaptorSoft!) - but I had real issues with the mouse sensitivity and the camera controls. The attack also isn't very intuitive to use - three times now I've made it to the little section where the camera goes overhead, and I die each time because I can't properly target the enemies, so I get my ass kicked every time. I should mention that I'm using keyboard and mouse, not a gamepad because I'm very much controller-impared - but I figured it was worth mentioning all the same. I'd kill for an options menu so I could alter the camera style and the mouse sensitivity, because I really wanna give this game another shot... but as it stands it's just kinda frustrating. :( I do hope you add that stuff in a future release because I'd definitely be interested in trying it out again!
Thanks for the feedback Skels! Yeah there's a lot of balance and positioning issues with jumping on enemies, esp with the camera angle change (which I thought might help in the end but alas). I'd like to eventually implement some kind of "lock-on" when you jump and then press a button to kind of hone in on an enemy's head if you're close enough to make it a bit more intuitive. I might revisit next year to tune it up! Thanks again for playing
This game rules! I loved it. Cannot wait for the full version.
I absolutely loved this game, i cannot overstate how much fun this was! The ONLY issue i had was the camera being a bit clunky, but honestly outside of that this game was a SOLID 10/10. I loved the music, the level design looks AWESOME and was super fun to explore, it felt like i was 10 playing battle for bikini bottom again! The camera could use a little work, it flips out when you go into any tight spaces and its a little uncomfortable that it keeps spinning even while you're moving, BUT i love the little lantern you carry around, it'd be super neat if you could swing it at the enemies. OH and the character design is great! I love the little dude and his ghost fit and lantern. Overall? 10/10, amazing game, if it were a full game with some tweaks to the camera I'd drop 30 bucks to play it at LEAST. LOVED IT!
Absolutely loved it, I really hope to see you expand on this when you have time
cool game only issue I saw really was the horrible camera and that you couldn't hit the candy snatchers with your pumpkin stick. other than that it was nicely designed and has a good soundtrack
This game is really awesome and brought me back to the 90s. I hope to see more of the full game if you decide to further develop it. It was very fun and I enjoyed it a lot.
Loved this!! The character designs were really cute, the game was short and sweet, there were some tiny lag issues and it would be really neat to attack, but for a cute lil demo this is incredible! I had an absolute blast playing it and I look forward to seeing more <3
I appreciate the effort to recreate the PS1 era graphics and the original soundtrack is great. I enjoyed the demo! I would however really like some sort of attack to defend against the candy goblins! A staff attack would be awesome. The difficulty is just about right. I wanted to keep playing to finish the level. One or two tweaks maybe but otherwise a fun time! Best of luck with the game!
Finally a decent looking 3D platformer!
I'm not surprised it's linked to the PSX-era demo disc trend.
Could you include some cheats in the game ? It's personally very challenging to unplayable with only 3 hearts, probably 100 hearts would be enough.
I can't find any controllers screen for the keyboard, so i guess i just have to jump on the enemies and risk losing hearts.
Cheats would be fun! I'll look into it for a future update
Challenging, but wholesome and fun platformer!
I want to like this. The vibes are superb. But jumping as your only attack is big time dog logs. The reach of enemies makes it hard to get close enough without taking damage, and lining up head bops in 3D is wonky. Ghost kid has that big staff, let him use it! A 45 degree front facing horizontal swing, so we can whack baddies, and/or a 360 degree spin (upgrade?) would greatly improve this game. Also I was fighting a constantly moving camera, and it's not my controller that I know of. Seems to have a mind of its own.
Probably one of the BEST retro platformer games I've seen in a long time! The style, the vibes and the gameplay hit in ALL the right places! It really got me in the cozy, nostalgic halloween spirit. I played the full demo in this video here!
It was a BLAST! Can't wait to play the full version!I loved the graphics they really reminded me of old games! I had such a great time playing even though I struggled a bit with the camera sensitivity. The vibe and the whole concept are amazing super fun experience!
Love this demo. It was a little tricky to get the hang of at first but I was able to (almost) 100% it. I found the green key, but couldn’t for the life of me find where to take it to. I searched for about an hour before calling it a night. A hint would be really appreciated <3
There is a hidden ledge beneath the first checkpoint lantern you encounter, right after the locked gate along the long path. Green key goes there
Awesome game! I love the visuals. It feels very cozy and nostalgic! I especially like the cool details like the CD loading sound.
My feedback would be that it feels a bit clunky and frustrating that you can't move during the bounce part after jumping on a crate or enemy. It's also hard to jump while walking down a slope because the character kind of bounces along the slope. (Very noticeable while walking down the first stairs you activate.)
The dithering is also a bit too strong (or big?) for my liking but that's just a minor thing.
This definitely has a lot of potential. Please consider making a full version.
Is it possible to turn off the grainy filter?
I may expand on it in the future. It is not possible to disable any of the filters at this time.
Very interesting game. Love the visuals.
I've seen quite a few games on itch over a couple of years but none of them have had such a perfect vibe. I feel this could be a very well relieved full release on the likes of Steam if you were to ever to that route. With slightly refined controls of course!
the camera is ass but the game is fun to play, also i like how you can hit the griddy by spamming W
Had a blast! Really fun, simple game
Made a video
sweet retro
This was a great bite-sized level which was clever in its design and mechanics. There were a few quirks that impacted my playthrough, but hopefully they’re easy to iron out if you ever wanted to expand on this:
I took a couple of hits when jumping on enemies’ heads while they were trying to bite me. We both took damage at the same time, but it felt unavoidable after committing to the jump. It does also feel like they charge and attack you too quickly, and you don’t have much time to react (especially if they spot you from around a corner or off-screen).
Some of the parts where it’s showing a cutscene (e.g. opening a gate) could be sped up a bit.
After grabbing the red key, I started getting framerate hiccups that got worse until I finished the level. I don’t know if it’s linked to all the enemies spawned near the exit portal, but it was almost unplayable in those final 60 seconds. I have a fairly beefy PC, but everything before that point was fine.
An options screen for the standard graphics options and camera controls would be nice to have.
Good game
Ghosts, ghouls, and goodies galore!
All wrapped in aesthetics I simply adore!
If there's no candy in my sack, mark my words, I will be back!
Have a spooky season, everyboooody~!
Really enjoyed the aesthetics of this one! Brought me back to Mad Monster Mansion in Banjo Kazooie. Music was also pretty awesome, I wonder who helped make it?? ;)
The music was made by DJ Trooz and Bassclefff!
Really an interesting PSX platform horror game.
Me: Day 223 without a new Soda Sodoraptor game… haaaa!
Sodaraptor: New game, everyone!
Me: I love it!
Really sick game !
I would be very curious to know more about the tools you used to facilitate prototyping, building a good toolset that fit your needs can be really challenging at times :p
I've been using Unity for over 12 years, half that has been indie dev, so I've accumulated a huge library of resources I like to use in every project. Mostly stuff like particle effect packs (JMo), post processing (PSXEffects), utility scripts (code like key collecting), etc. As time goes on and you develop more you find yourself hoarding a lot of reusable material!
There's something going on with the floating platforms around the tower you break a pillar off of, after dying or having the platforms reset after they break, not sure which exactly, the second set of platforms appears to reset to a position too high to actually jump to.
Hmm that's weird. Is it impossible to reach after awhile? I'll take a look at see if I can fix it in a quick update. Thanks for playing!
I thought I was going crazy when I suddenly couldn't make the jump on those platforms, glad to hear it wasn't my (average-ish) platforming skills 😭
The game still looks amazing though, as always a 10/10 on art style.
Loved it!
How did you do the dithering dots effect all over the screen? Is it a byproduct of the posterize effect?
Thanks~
It is the result of PSXEffects, a post-processing asset pack I used.
