Future Development and Updates

Hi all-

Thanks so much to everyone who's tried out our 12-day jam game so far! We both truly appreciate all the reception and feedback we've gotten, and loved watching all the playthroughs. I wanted to take a minute to quickly list out some of our future plans for Covert Critter, and what we hopefully have the bandwidth to add in later updates/patches. We don't want to promise too much, but here's a few basic ideas we have so far for a future FULL version.

Controller support

This is the biggest one for us, as we are fully aware that playing this style of game with mouse and keyboard just isn't exactly ideal. Controller support will be one of the first things we work towards and, although it seems like a straightforward thing to add,  it will most likely involve a lot of testing/designing. We want to make sure it feels good to sit back and play just like back in the day.

Expanded story/missions

During testing and while watching other playthroughs, we noticed a lot of the plot (or lack thereof) fell by the wayside. Being haphazardly tossed together kind of last minute during the jam, it ended as more of an afterthought. We want to go back and touch this up, actually add a cohesive and fun narrative, and have more in-game animated scenes to watch.

Emphasis on replayability

One of the coolest things we would like to add is the possibility of unlocking cool items if you reach a certain goal, whether it's a rank, stealth-bonus, or items found. Once you beat the game the first time, you'll want to go back and try a different playstyle or be a little more sneaky. Unlockables we've thought of so far include new skins/outfits, infinite-use gadgets, and new powerful gadgets you can start the game with.

Accessibility

We have a number of options we'd also like to add, for both comfortability and accessibility reasons. Obvious stuff like resolution, volume, graphic quality, etc. But also additional options such as sensitivity, brightness, filter toggles, and a colorblind mode for locked doors and keycards.

Overall, we're really happy with how the jam version of the game turned out, and want to maintain that same framework throughout  our development. The polygonal 90's MGS-styled aesthetic is also one we have no plans to change or abandon.

We hope you continue to enjoy the demo for Covert Critter! As always, if you have any ideas for gameplay, gadgets, items, unlockables, or anything cool, reach out to us on Twitter or just reply on the game page here. Thank you!

Nice to hear about controller support! Also - do try to make a good story and narrative. Humble beginnings done with care can really grow and become novel, memorable, and very fun to engage with.

Here's looking forward to seeing more updates. Don't give up. Keep going!
